BODYGRAM® HBO
A clinical platform for advanced body composition analysis in hospital settings
BODYGRAM® HBO is a software solution intended for use in hospital, academic, and healthcare environments. It supports the acquisition, processing, and clinical interpretation of bioimpedance data generated by AKERN® analyzers, incorporating advanced scientific models and clinically validated parameters to enhance decision-making in clinical practice.
All of Akern®’s expertise, brought together in a software solution

The evolution of scientific research, supported by Akern, is integrated into the software through updates to the Biavector, along with updated equations and reference values to support professionals across various clinical settings, in line with the latest guidelines.
Features included with HBO Advanced

-
Qualitative body composition
AKERN® was among the first to incorporate BIVA (Bioelectrical Impedance Vector Analysis) into its systems through the Biavector® nomogram. This method allows an immediate and objective evaluation of nutritional and hydration status, based on tissue bioelectrical properties, thus overcoming the limitations associated with predictive equations used in conventional BIA.
Within HBO Advanced, the Biavector® (2024) has been updated with new reference ellipses derived from a large cohort of healthy subjects (18–65 years), providing improved representativeness compared to the original 1995 model. Additionally, the system includes a Biavector® tailored to the geriatric population (2025), designed to increase diagnostic sensitivity in assessing nutritional and hydration alterations in older adults. -
Malnutrition
Malnutrition risk screening and monitoring
In accordance with GLIM criteria, the malnutrition section enables:
- assessment of malnutrition risk (early identification) through the Malnutrition Risk Index;
- evaluation of muscle quantity and quality using specific parameters such as ASMMI (Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass Index), based on DEXA-derived equations;
- prognostic evaluation of nutritional status using the NUTRIGRAM® scale;
- Phase Angle (PhA) percentile curves, based on a dataset of over 4,500 European Caucasian subjects.
-
Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia screening and monitoring
Compliant with EWGSOP2 and GLIM guidelines, the platform supports sarcopenia screening and assessment through:
- Hand Grip Strength Test (HGS) – for muscle function assessment;
- Sarcopenia Algorithm – graphical representation combining muscle strength and muscle mass to classify the patient as sarcopenic, dynapenic, or at risk;
- ASMMI (Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass Index), FFMI (Fat-Free Mass Index) and SMMI (Skeletal Muscle Mass Index) – for a more precise assessment of muscle mass.
-
Sarcopenic obesity
Sarcopenic Obesity screening and monitoring
Aligned with ESPEN, EASO, and SOGLI guidelines, the platform supports comprehensive screening and assessment of sarcopenic obesity by combining key clinical parameters:
- Disease Risk Index – to estimate the metabolic risk associated with sarcopenic obesity;
- Hand Grip Strength Test (HGS) – for muscle function assessment;
- FM (Fat Mass), SMM (Skeletal Muscle Mass), ASMM (Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass) – to differentiate between obesity and sarcopenic obesity.
-
Hydration
Hydration status assessment
The assessment of hydration status is based on the following parameters:
- HYDRAGRAM® – it ia a scale to classify the patient as normohydrated, hyperhydrated, or dehydrated ;
- Predictive equations based on linear regression models for the assessment of TBW (Total Body Water), ECW (Extracellular Water), and ICW (Intracellular Water).
- OH (Overhydration) – new algorithm for estimating excess extracellular fluid, based on Hydragram® technology.
