Based on a systematic review with meta-analysis of 27 studies (4872 participants) on critically ill ICU patients, this study demonstrated that low phase angle (PhA) is associated with an increased risk of mortality and ICU length of stay. In contrast, overhydration was not found to be predictive of mortality.

In this study on 1023 patients, low phase angle was associated with an increased risk of death 1 year after ICU admission (OR: 1.81; CI: 1.09-2.97; p = 0.02). Presence of malignancy (OR: 2.30; CI: 1.31-4.02; p = 0.004) and APACHE III score grade (OR: 1.03; CI: 1.02-1.04; p < 0.001) were risk factors as well.
